ANOTHER LIFE

In another life
you were a hunter
and I, a cave painter.
You hammered obsidian to a sharp point
and fastened it to an antler
with egg shell and pine resin.
I wrapped heaps of dry moss
and tar
to an oak branch
and with flint stone
made fire.
You stalked reindeer and bison
I retreated to dark places
with my torch
and with charcoal
I drew horses
and panthers
leaving hand prints of red henna.
Around the fire
we ate bison
skins of reindeer kept us warm
We’d take up torches
and marvel at my drawings.
In another life
you were a hunter
and I, a cave painter.
In another life
we let each other be.
